"Cardinal II"

The idea of this piece came from two particular quotes, the first one I've heard my entire life- "When a cardinal appears an angel is near."

I distinctly remember instantly falling in love with this idea as a child. The flash of red and loving excitement that an angel is by me in the garden. 

Elders in my family were intentional in explaining that cardinals weren't only angels but loved ones who have died, and this idea changed how I viewed cardinals. It morphed into a jaded unbelief because I saw a lot cardinals, but I didn't know a lot of people who had died and wanted to somehow say hello.

My childish naivete vanished as I grew up and experienced more of life and living with the death of loved ones.

This darkness represents grief for me and the deep emptiness felt having lost a loved one. There is a shadow of darkness in death, but I feel assured of a reunion one day through Christ.

This light gives me hope.
